trimming text in a datagrid to match column length
email list would have (from, subject, time sent, size) but the subject
could be very long in theory, and then it would word wrap.. the subject is a
variable width column (resizes to fit space) while the others are fixed
size... the problem is that i dont want the text to ever word wrap.. but
truncate the visible subject to match the current cell width... (kinda like
gmail does) how would i go about doing this at runtime on the client's page?
thanks!I guess there are a couple of ways that I can think of to fix this. The fir
st and easiest way could be to only return a certain number of characters fr
om the query of stored procedure. For example:
select substring(subject, 0, 10) from emaillist
that way the query will do all the work.
Now another example could be to do it within the code, for example:
<ItemTemplate>
<%# TrimSubject(DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem, "Subject")) %>
</ItemTemplate>
public string TrimSubject(string subject)
{
string retVal = subject;
if(retVal.Length>100)
{
retVal = retVal.Substring(0, 100) + "...";
}
return retVal;
}
Hope those examples help.

You can use GDI+ to do this. Here's some quick/dirty code I wrote to do
this. Hope this helps!

Hi Brian,
As for the truncating string values in DataGrid Cell(Table cell), I think
generally we have two means:
1. Truncating the string's length at serverside when we retrieve it from db
or output into the page via code. Just as the other members have suggested.
But this will make the output string's length be a fixed size.
#Creating a Custom DataGridColumn Class, Part 2
http://aspnet.4guysfromrolla.com/ar...100202-1.2.aspx
2. Using css style on the output <table> and the text content in table
cell. There is one css attribute named
"OVERFLOW", it can be applied on <div> or <p> ... and when we set the
"OVERFLOW:Hidden", it will truncat the exceeded content according to the
container element's width.
#overflow Attribute | overflow Property
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d...uthor/dhtml/ref
erence/properties/overflow.asp
For example:
<p style="OVERFLOW:hidden;WIDTH:100">
<% Response.Write(new String('d',1000)); %>
</p>
Also, since in our problem, we need to set the datagrid column's width
unfixed, so we also need to make the with of the <p> as a relative size.
After some testing, it seems that we also have to assign the "table-layout
: fixed" css attribute to the DataGrid(<table> ). Here is some demo code on
applying the styles on datagrid:
<asp:DataGrid id="dgStyle" runat="server" AutoGenerateColumns="False">
<Columns>
<asp:BoundColumn DataField="Column1"
HeaderText="Column1"></asp:BoundColumn>
<asp:BoundColumn DataField="Column2"
HeaderText="Column2"></asp:BoundColumn>
<asp:TemplateColumn HeaderText="Column3">
<ItemTemplate>
<p style="OVERFLOW:hidden;WIDTH:90%">
<asp:Label runat="server" Text='<%# DataBinder.Eval(Container,
"DataItem.Column3") %>'>
</p>
</asp:Label>
</ItemTemplate>
</asp:TemplateColumn>
</Columns>
</asp:DataGrid>
=======================
In our code-behind , we can use the following code (in Page_load) to apply
the "table-layout" style on datagrid:
private void Page_Load(object sender, System.EventArgs e)
{
...............
dgStyle.Style["TABLE-LAYOUT"] = "fixed";
}
Hope these help. Thanks.

Trivia Game Help!
Hi I need a trivia game for a website. I'm using C# and have tried searching the internet for a sample application but could not find one. So can someone pls help me on how to create one? I would really appreciate the help.
Tahnks
That's pretty vague.....
Is this some homework project you are getting others to try to do, or are you just trying to get a full blown app for free?
How well did you search? There must be a million trivia games out there. You at least should have found the Absolute Beginner's tutorial videos on this web site (click "Learn" on the menu above). There's a four part seris on creating a quiz engine.
Jeff
Hi is there one for asp.net 1.1 coz i'm still new to C# and asp.net. Pls if you can send me a sample application to get me started or if you can give me a link to a website that you know where i can perhaps download the app.
Thanx
Trouble accesing IIS 5.1
I am trying to open a new ASP.NET Web Application Project using Visual Studio .NET, but it is denied with the following error:
Web Server reported the following error when attempting to create or open the Web Project located at the following URL : "http://localhost/WebApplication1"
'HTTP/1.1 403 Access Forbidden'
I installed everything correctly, first IIS 5.1, then Visual Studio .NET with the update of ASP.NET to 1.1. The error was there even before the update, so I don't think that might be a cause for this problem.
Would appreciate your help guys, as I have to submit the project soon, and really need to get going. Thanks ever so much.To fix IIS mappings for ASP.NET, follow these steps:
1. Click Start -> run -> cmd - ENTER
2. At the command prompt, type the following, and then press ENTER:
"%windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\version\aspnet_regiis.exe" -i
In this path, version represents the version number of the .NET Framework that you installed on your server. You need to replace with the actual version number when you type the command.
3. Register the Aspnet_isapi.dll by clicking start -> run
4. In the Open text box, type "regsvr32 %windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\version\aspnet_isapi.dll" and then press ENTER
I have re-installed everything, first IIS 5.1, then Visual Studio .NET. Now, it is coming up with the "HTTP/1.1 500 Sever Error"
My initial problem was solved when I followed advice posted below:
http://weblogs.asp.net/jblizzard/archive/2003/07/28/10623.aspx
When I tried to run commands you provided, it returned an error, saying The command is not specified. I suspect it might be because I put 1.1 instead of version in that command. Probably it is not just 1.1 but the full version, which I don't know. Could you advice.
Thanks once again for your kind help.
Trouble connecting to AS/400 with ASP.NET
I am writing an ASP.NET application and trying to connect to an as400
using an ADODB connection. I recently completed a Windows application
that connects to the 400. My code works in the Windows world, so
theoretically, it should work for the ASP application as well. But it
doesn't. I keep getting the error CWBSY1006 - User ID is Invalid. I'm
using my Windows login information to automatically log into the 400,
so a userid and password is not required. It does work, however, if I
hard code my userid and password into the connection string. The
only problem with that is that the users need to log in with their
information for security purposes. Here is my code. Any ideas would
be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Amaryllis

conn400.ConnectionString = "Provider=IBMDA400.DataSource.1;" & _
"Data source=MyAS400"
conn400.Open()That is because ASP.NET runs under the ASPNET account. It does not run
under you. So of course, the ASPNET account does not have integrated
security access to your database.
You neither need to give that account rights to the database, or use a
username/password to log in.

I agree, but when you add <impersonate=TRUE /> to the web.config
file, it should pick up your information and use it rather than the
ASPNET account information. I've always been able to connect to SQL
Server using that approach. I'm just not sure what is different
about DB2 on the AS/400.

I agree, but when you add <impersonate=TRUE /> to the web.config
file, it should pick up your information and use it rather than the
ASPNET account information. I've always been able to connect to SQL
Server using that approach. I'm just not sure what is different
about DB2 on the AS/400.

Trouble Deploying ASP.NET Application
I'm new to ASP.NET and just finished up a small application.
Essentially it's just a form that writes data to a CSV file on the
server after a user fills in the form. The code compiles and runs on
my development machine (VS.NET 2002) but when I FTP all the files to
the server I get a "Server Error in '/' Application." error. I can't
figure out why it won't run. A couple notes:
~ I have no idea of the server settings. It's a clients machine and I
was only told it is a .NET machine.
~ I can't seem to change the Cusomt Error Message in web.config even
though I change the XML, recompile the code and FTP it to the server.
~ This code is residing in a sub-directory of the main web application.
~ I've tried deleteing web.config and Global.asax to see if that would
help but no luck.
Any help would be appreciated,
Justin@dotnet.itags.org.Cutroni.ComMan, you are in a true pickle, Justin.
Let me venture a guess. Under your circumstances, about the only thing you
could do would be a trace IN the page, which you might try, but I sure
wouldn't like to have all the constraints on me that you have, especially if
I was new to .Net!
You say it writes to a file. Therefore, the account under which it is
running must have permission to write to the folder in which the file
resides. My guess would be that it is running under an underpriveleged
account, but you will need to find this out somehow.

Hi Kevin,
Thanks for your response. I'm in the process of stepping throught the
file line by line trying to find what's throwing the error.
I agree, it may be a permissions issue with the CSV file.
Unfortunately getting ahold of the sys admin is a time consuimg process
and the only access I have to the server is FTP access.
Justin
So I've been trying to debug a bit and I've found something
interesting. I added a blank ASPX page to my project. This file has
absolutely nothing in it excep a Response.write() call. But if I
compile the project, FTP it to the server and then try to load this
ASPX page I still get the generic "Server Error in '/' Application".
Any thoughts? I could really use a hand.
Thanks,
Justin
Is there anyone out there that can offer a little help re: this issue?
I have a small web app that compiles and runs on my machine but will
not run on the server after I FTP it to the server. Even the simplest
pages throw a "Server Error in '/' Application." error.
I've tried tweking web.config to display a more robust error but that
is not working.
First, if it is in a subdirectory off the main application you must make the
sub-directory it's own application. Otherwise the files in the bin directory
aren't paid attention to since they aren't in the bin directory for the main
application. To make a directory into an applicaton you open the IIS MMC and
select the properties for the particular directory and on the Directory tab
click the button that says Create Application.
Hope this helps,

THANK YOU!!!! Once I get ahold of the sys admin that's what I'll tell
him to do. I had read some similar things but was unsure if I needed
to make this sub-directory it's own application. Now I know the
answer. Hopefully that works.
Question, is there a way to create ASP.NET code that plugs into the
existing application without having to modify any settings in IIS? It
would be great if I could just drop this code on the server and have it
run "inside" the current application.
Thanks,
justin

Shouldn't you test that it works BEFORE saying that you know the answer ?

As long as you drop the code in a subdirectory of your
application's directory, everything should work fine.

True, I should test it before stating that it works.
So, If I'm reading your note correctly, I should be able to drop my
application in a sub-folder of an existing application and it should
run correctly? I tried that and got an error. Plus I tried to change
web.config to display a more verbose error message but it's still
display the friendly error message.
re:

That's not what you asked.
You asked if you could drop *code* in a sub-folder
of an existing, and whether it would run correctly.
It *will* run correctly, if you drop it as *code*.
What you are attempting to do is *nest* applications, which since
ASP 1.0 has been *verboten* ( forbidden ), because it leads to
*kaput*, i.e., the end of your application.
If you want a different application, create a different application.
If you want a sub-application, just run it in a sub-directory of your main application.
You don't have to run a sub-application as a *different* application.
If you do, that application won't be able
to share any values with your main application

One thing to note is that if you use VS.NET to create a ASP.NET web
application its forcing your project to become a virtual directory and it
treats is as 1 appliation. Now if you are uploading a folder to a already
working web app then you gotta check few things:
1. The .dll that VS.NET creates cannot be in the bin folder subdirectory
that you are uploading. The .dll file should be placed in the root directory
of your already working website. You can only place the .dll in the bin
folder within a sub directory if that directory is a virtual directory.
2. VS.NET creates a web.config file with standard elements that you would
find in a asp.net app defined as a virtual directory. Please be mindful that
there are certain elements that can only be declared at the machine level or
at the virtual level and NOT at the subdirectory level. So, check your
web.config file that vs.net creates for you and make sure elements like
<session>, <authentication>, I think thats it, are removed from the
web.config file since they can only be declared for a folder that is a
virtual directory..which your directory is not.
See if any of these helps. This is something I have to go through with
Virtual Hosting companies all the time.

Trouble getting the ASP.NET error page to appear remotely
using 'Copy Project' to copy all the files up to the ISP location.
When I run the application locally then all is OK. When I run the
application from the ISP site I get an runtime error.
Because the default page does not givem me any indication as to what
the actual problem is, then I change the web.config file using the
recommended custom error tags as follows:
<customErrors mode= "Off" />
This did not result in me getting the detailed page that would have
been displayed at the server on the ISP. So I tried to create a custom
page by creating a HTML file 'mycustompage.htm' and the modifying the
tag to give:
<customErrors mode= "RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm" />
But the result is still the default page with no indication of error.
It is as if the application is not reading the web.config file.
The tag above had been entered inside the existing <system.web> tag.
Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe it isn't reading it. Try introducing a syntax error into the
web.config file and see if the syntax error is caught.
Are you sure your ISP has your app set up as an application in IIS?

Trouble installing ASP.Net app on 2003 enterprise server (404's)
After installing the application I get 404's when I try to access the
aspx pages on the server (not other pages like html or stylesheets).
I installed IIS after the .Net runtime and ran aspnet_regiis
afterwards. I checked, that the .aspx extension is mapped to the
aspnet_isapi.dll for all verbs. Still no luck.
An example W3C log entry is:

My environment is IIS 6.0 on Windows Server 2003 Enterpise Edition.
CLR version is 1.1.4322.
I don't quite know where to go from here. Can somebody help me out
here?

Kevin,
I'm new to IIS6, so how do you mark the app as application? It's
configured to use the default application pool with execution
permissions on scripts only.

Trouble opening an existing web application
Visual Studio cannot create or open the application. The likeliest problem is that required components are not installed to the local web server. Run visual studio .NET setup and add the web development tool.

Trouble sending email with ASP.NET 2.0
certain form is submitted. When it tries to send the email, I receive the
following error:
Transaction failed. The server response was: njsokalski@dotnet.itags.org.hotmail.com:
Recipient address rejected: Access denied
(in the error message, the part with the email address was displayed as
<myemailaddress>, but you will probably see a link because our news viewers
think they know what we want). I know that the address is correct, so what
is it that the server didn't like about it? Is it saying I don't have
permission to use the SMTP server (I was pretty sure I was, but this is the
first time I am sending email from this server)? Is there something wrong
with my code? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You didn't provide your code, so it is hard to tell.
However, this works for me:
Try
Dim mail As New Mail.MailMessage()
mail.From = New Mail.MailAddress("mail@.mail.somewhere",
"Subject")
mail.To.Add("another@.mail.somewhere")
mail.Subject = "Subject"
mail.Body = "Body"
Dim smtp As New Mail.SmtpClient("mail.planprojekt.dk")
smtp.Credentials = New
NetworkCredential("mail@.mail.somewhere", "password")
smtp.Send(mail)
bEmailSent = True
Catch ex As Exception
Exit Sub
End Try
/Snedker
If you are using the machine's local SMTP Service,
you may need to add a Smarthost or domains (e.g., "*.com", "*.net")
so that email sent through it is allowed to be sent out or relayed.

trouble with Forms authentication and new windows opened with java script
I have an application using "Forms authentication".
Everything works perfectly well except when I try to open
a new page with java script like the following:
<script language='javascript'>window.open
(myPage.aspx','','Fullscreen=no; Scrollbars=yes;
Menubar=no; Locationbar=no; Resizable=yes; Status=no;')
</script
I now get to see the login page. Does anybody know how to
prevent this behaviour?
Thank you a lot!

I haven't tried this myself, but I would think that if the page you're
opening is in the same domain as the site you authenticated to, that there
would be no problem.
The question comes down to whether the authentication cookie is sent to the
server by the second page. If it wasn't sent, it would most likely be
because of different domains. For instance, if you authenticated at
http://area.company.com, and you're trying to open a page at
http://somewhereelse.company.com, it should succeed if the authentication
cookie was in domain "company.com", but not if it was in domain
"area.company.com".
As a diagnostic, put a link to your "myPage.aspx" on the page and click the
link and see what happens.
Also, what browser are you using?

2 things...
One... what's the timeout on your session? This could cause this to happen.
I had some thing like this happen with iframes. I would get the login in the
iframe that timedout.
Let me look for the JavaScript that I used to fix it.

here is the Java script...
In the .aspx add at the beginning of the page (somewhere in the header)
<%If Request("var") <> "" Then%>
<script language="javascript">
top.location.href = 'login.aspx';
</script>
<%End If%
What this does is check the session var "var" if it is not set (session time
out) it will load the login screen in the top frame. you might have to
change it to parent.location.href or something down that line...

Thank you John and George,
Unfortunately neither of your assumptions is right. I don't navigate across
domain borders neither should my session be timed out. It is not that it
happens once in a while but ever. The page I open using Java Script is
located in a sub-directory of the same application. I am using Microsoft IE
6 SP1.
Any other suggestions? If you want I can assemble a small project containing
the two pages and up it here.
Greetings

Hi Daniel,
Since the "mypage.aspx" is in a sub directory of your web application, is
there also a "web.config" in the sub directory? And, when you perform the
form authentication, did you change any default settings for cookies?
Additionlly, have you checked if a link will work as John suggested?

Hello Luke,
Thank you for your help but I solved my problem this afternoon. In fact
George was right. My session was lost. Not due to a timeout but to the fact
that I not even had an HTML file. Mea culpa. I was directly streaming out a
pdf file. I now placed my page in an iFrame and the world is good again.
Thank you everybody for your help!

Trouble with huge amount of State Server Sessions Timed out
I have a web application which sometimes throws an “out of memory”
exception. To get an idea what happens I traced some values using performanc
e
monitor and got the following values (for one day):
\\FFDS24\ASP.NET Applications(_LM_W3SVC_1_Root_ATV2004)\E
rrors During
Execution: 7
\\FFDS24\ASP.NET Apps v1.1. 4322(_LM_W3SVC_1_Root_ATV2004)\Compilati
ons
Total: 10
\\FFDS24\ASP.NET Apps v1.1.4322(_LM_W3SVC_1_Root_ATV2004)\Errors Total: 7
\\FFDS24\ASP.NET v1.1.4322\State Server Sessions Timed Out: 2999
\\FFDS24\ASP.NET v1.1.4322\State Server Sessions Total: 3008
Could somebody please provide me with some background information on those
values? What exactly would be an Errors During Execution? And what could be
the reason for this huge amount of State Server Sessions Timed out?
Processor time was < 2% for the whole day and the server almost always had
1GB of free RAM.
Thank you a lot in advance!
DanielHi Daniel,
Welcome to ASPNET newsgroup.
From your description, you're currently suffering a out-of-memory excpetion
on your webserver that host the ASP.NET application. Also from the perfmon
log, you found that there're huge numbers of StateServer Session time out
entries.
Well, for the
\\FFDS24\ASP.NET v1.1.4322\State Server Sessions Timed Out: 2999
\\FFDS24\ASP.NET v1.1.4322\State Server Sessions Total: 3008
entries they're only meaningful to server which is configured to running
asp.net state service , providing session state server for other remote
machines(also local). So is your problem server confgured as state server?
Also, how many asp.net apps are there running on your problem server and
can you try isolate the problem to only a particular web app among them?
If we can isolate the problem to a certain web app , it'll be much helpful
for us to look into it futher.
Thanks,
Steven Cheng

Hello Steven,
thank you for your reply! As I missed to mention and you most probably
already guessed the application having the problem is configured using a
state server running on exactly the same machine as the application is
running on. This server also hosts another couple of (tiny) applications
which all are configured to manage their session state inProc. Therefore the
problem I am facing is only specific to this certain application.
What information do you need to track down the problem?
Would you happen to have a documentation of the entries of the Performance
monitor? The explanations which come with performance monitor are not exactl
y
ausführlich. I still don’t know for example what Errors During Execution
are
and when the application would be compiled. Where would I get details about
this performance counters?
Thank you Steven! Your help is greatly appreciated!

Hi Daniel,
Thanks for your followup.
Based on my experience, inspite of some code related problems such as
memory leak , we can first try checking some common things which may cause
the problem. One most common issue is that when we deploy our release
version app the the server, we haven't changed the "compilation" element's
"debug" attrribute to false. Like:
<compilation debug="false"/>
So is the certain asp.net webapp's web.config debug mode turned off? If
not, since the ASP.NET runtime won't use batch compilation for the pages or
other dynamnic compiled resources, it'll make those compiled pages or
components in separate assemblies and make the memory divdided into
individual sections. Thus, it's possible to cause memory fragment that'll
cause allocate large block of memory failed.
In addition, since the ASP.NET has workprocess recycle setting on memory
limitation, that means the runtime will recycle the worker process when its
used memory size has exceed a certain configured value. Is your server 2k
server or 2003 server and how much is the total physical memory on the
server? For 2k server, the setting is in the <processModel> element in
machine.config, For 2003 server(iis6), we can configure it in the IIS's
application pool setting. So you can check whether you've set it memory
limit to a very high value so that the process won't recycle before the
used memory exceed that value.

Steven Cheng

Steven,
thank you for your answer. In fact, to my horror, I had to realize that
<compilation debug/> was set to true which I now changed to false.
As for your question regarding the server the application is hosted of a 2
processor xeon with 2 GB RAM and Windows 2003 Server. I checked IIS
Application Pool Settings and the only thing which is configured is “Recyc
le
worker process (in minutes)”. There are no settings configured for “Memo
ry
recycling”. As I already mentioned there is almost always 1GB RAM availabl
e,
only for a couple of times when only 800MB were available. Recycling of the
process due to lack of memory should definitely not be a problem, at least
this is what I would have expected…
Greetings
Daniel

Hi Daniel,
Thanks for the followup. If the compiliation/@.debug has already been turned
off and still encountering out-of-memory exceptions , the problem maybe
somewhat hard to troubleshoot form the surface. And currently I'm thinking
the problem maybe something related to the STATEserver session. Something I
wanted to point out is that storing data in the ASP.NET Session in the
State Service or SQL Server can be memory intensive depending on the types
of data being stored. The w3wp.exe process has to serialize the data
before saving it into session. This can result in 2 - 3 objects being
created for the serialization process to occur. If this occurs for a
dataset that is 100 MB in size, it could
potentially create 200-300 MB of objects to store it in session before the
request is complete. The following link has some information from one of
our developers outlining the differences in session and recommendations:
Understanding session state modes + FAQ
http://www.asp.net/Forums/ShowPost...x=1&PostID=7504
So is there any particular large objects or non-seriazable objects which
your application frequently trying to store into out of process session?
BTW, looking at the nature of this issue, it would require intensive
troubleshooting(memory dump and analysis) which would be done quickly and
effectively with direct assistance from a Microsoft Support Professional
through Microsoft Product Support Services. So I also recommend you
consider opening a regular case for this issue if you feel it urgent and
critical.

| Steven,
|
| thank you for your answer. In fact, to my horror, I had to realize that
| <compilation debug/> was set to true which I now changed to false.
| As for your question regarding the server the application is hosted of a
2

| Application Pool Settings and the only thing which is configured is
“Recycle

Steven,
In regards to your post on 7/24 below. I think I'm having a problem related
to this. I have app running on a windows 2003 web farm and after a couple
hours I get the error below . Even though this app runs OK on my dev machin
e
and during testing, half way through the day, one of the production servers
eventually seems to raise this. I am storing datasets in sessions but I don'
t
know how I can determine if this is the problem. If datasets can be a
problem, I'm not sure what I can do as a workaround...
My error...
