TripleDES with Hexadecimal Key
fields. It will be symmetric encryption - TripleDES.
The vendor has given me the Key that we will share. With the exception
that there are 48 characters in the actual Key that he gave me, here
is an example of what he gave me: 0E329232EA6D0D73 (The vendor has
told me to use all zeros for the IV.)
How can I use this with the .Key property of
TripleDESCryptoServicerProvider? I realize that what he is giving me
is hexadecimal, but how do I convert it a .Key that I can use with
the .NET framework. The only way that I can see to set the .Key
property is: Dim objDES.Key as Byte() = {48, 3, 17, 131, 202, ....and
so on}
How do I either convert the .Key that the vendor has given me to the
VB.NET language above - or is there another to set the .Key property
that I am overlooking?
Any help anyone could give would be hugely appreciated - thanks!It 0E329232EA6D0D73 is hexadecimal notation of 14, 50, ... in decimal
where did 48, 3, 17, 131, 202, came from?
Use calc.exe to convert it to decimal and write correct values
Dim objDES.Key as Byte() = {14, 50, }
Or you can use
Int32.Parse("0E", NumberStyles.HexNumber )
Int32.Parse("32", NumberStyles.HexNumber )
...

Trouble accesing IIS 5.1
I am trying to open a new ASP.NET Web Application Project using Visual Studio .NET, but it is denied with the following error:
Web Server reported the following error when attempting to create or open the Web Project located at the following URL : "http://localhost/WebApplication1"
'HTTP/1.1 403 Access Forbidden'
I installed everything correctly, first IIS 5.1, then Visual Studio .NET with the update of ASP.NET to 1.1. The error was there even before the update, so I don't think that might be a cause for this problem.
Would appreciate your help guys, as I have to submit the project soon, and really need to get going. Thanks ever so much.To fix IIS mappings for ASP.NET, follow these steps:
1. Click Start -> run -> cmd - ENTER
2. At the command prompt, type the following, and then press ENTER:
"%windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\version\aspnet_regiis.exe" -i
In this path, version represents the version number of the .NET Framework that you installed on your server. You need to replace with the actual version number when you type the command.
3. Register the Aspnet_isapi.dll by clicking start -> run
4. In the Open text box, type "regsvr32 %windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\version\aspnet_isapi.dll" and then press ENTER
I have re-installed everything, first IIS 5.1, then Visual Studio .NET. Now, it is coming up with the "HTTP/1.1 500 Sever Error"
My initial problem was solved when I followed advice posted below:
http://weblogs.asp.net/jblizzard/archive/2003/07/28/10623.aspx
When I tried to run commands you provided, it returned an error, saying The command is not specified. I suspect it might be because I put 1.1 instead of version in that command. Probably it is not just 1.1 but the full version, which I don't know. Could you advice.
Thanks once again for your kind help.
Trouble connecting to an SQL database in C#
I'm using Visual Web Developer and I've made a GridView and I want to learn how to display information in it (or any other databound control) rather than doing it through the asp source code. I'm using the following code so far, and although I've probably made some errors in it I think there is a problem connecting to the database remotely as I get the following error on the "myConnection.Open()" line.
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
I tried following the instructions here http://www.datamasker.com/SSE2005_NetworkCfg.htm but didn't have much luck as I don't seem to have the interface shown in the screen prints.
My code so far is
SqlConnection myConnection = new SqlConnection("Server=local;database=WroxUnited");
SqlCommand myCommand = new SqlCommand("SELECT * FROM [Fixtures]", myConnection);
myConnection.Open();
GridView1.DataSource = myCommand.ExecuteReader();
GridView1.DataBind();
myConnection.Close();
Thanks in advance.You specified a server (Local) and a database (WroxUnited) ... just so that we're on the same page, that isn't a remote DB... it's local on your PC.
But the problem is probably because you didn't specify an authentication method... do you intend to use integrated security (using WIndows Authentication) or to use SQL Server Authentication? IF you want integrated securtity then you need to add "Integrated Security=SSPI;" to the connection string otherwise add "Integrated Security=False;User ID=XXXXXX;Password=YYYYYYYY;"
-tg
You can make use of the idea in this code:
SqlConnection sc1 = new SqlConnectionConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings ["CompanyConnectionString"].ToString ());
SqlDataAdapter sa1 = new SqlDataAdapter();
sc1.Open();
string c = "Select Name , Postion_Name from Employee join Postion on Postion_Num=Postion_ID";
SqlCommand sqc1 = new SqlCommand(c,sc1);
DataSet ds = new DataSet();
sa1.SelectCommand = sqc1;
sa1.Fill(ds);
GridView1.DataSource = ds;
What's annoying is there seems to be so many different ways to go about it, and as I'm just beginning to learn .NET it's all a bit confusing. I'm sure I'll get it eventually but I'm worried I may have already got it but something's not set up correctly to work. However if I do it through ASP source code using a ConnectionString=<%$ConnectionStrings=WroxUnited%> for example then it does work so I suppose it's unlikely to be a problem with the SQL Server set-up.
Just to test that it does actually work would someone be kind enough to post here the smallest amount of code necessary to display data from a database called WroxUnited.mdf stored in the C:, in a gridview called GridView1? Or if it's easier to use another data control then let me know and I'll do it that way.
Thanks for all the help!
trouble creating a zodiac sign web service...
The problem I am having is that I have no idea how to do the following:
I receive a DateTime object with the date as a ShortDateFormat (e.g. 3/1/2005), and I would like to compare this to make sure it falls within a range of dates (compare it to a date range of February 20- March 20 for example) and it returns true. At which point I return the String "Pisces."
Any help on how to do this is greatly appreciated. The problem I don't understand is how to compare a date to a date range and see if it falls within it or not!
Thanks in advance
~nK~
p.s. sorry if this is in the wrong section but I posted in XML Web Services as well :)Hi,
As far as I know there is no scalar to range comparison. Use simple search algorithm to locate relevant range. You can sort your zodiac date ranges by starting date, compare your input date to starting date, until you find first starting date greater then input date, use previous range.
yea or convert all the days to a numeric day of the year (0-364(5) or 1-365(6)), then set numeric ranges for all the zodiac signs (100-131 = pices for example), then you can convert the entered date to a number and tell where it "fits in" to the zodiac ranges.
I created the service using a select statement on the month part alone.
Then each case is for each month, and then it has an if to say whether it is less than or equal to a specific day at which point it returns the correct zodiac sign.
For example, if I put in the date 3/1/05 it should return Pisces.
Select Month(dateObj)
Case 3
If Day(dateObj) <=21 Then
return "Pisces"
Else: Return "Aries"
and so on...
Of course the dateObj is the date that is returned.
Now I am trying to make the date not be cultural specific. Any ideas how this is done?
Basically, in some parts of the world they enter the date as dd/mm/yy but in other parts its mm/dd/yy. So that's what I meant by not cultural specific.
Thanks.

Trouble getting the ASP.NET error page to appear remotely
using 'Copy Project' to copy all the files up to the ISP location.
When I run the application locally then all is OK. When I run the
application from the ISP site I get an runtime error.
Because the default page does not givem me any indication as to what
the actual problem is, then I change the web.config file using the
recommended custom error tags as follows:
<customErrors mode= "Off" />
This did not result in me getting the detailed page that would have
been displayed at the server on the ISP. So I tried to create a custom
page by creating a HTML file 'mycustompage.htm' and the modifying the
tag to give:
<customErrors mode= "RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm" />
But the result is still the default page with no indication of error.
It is as if the application is not reading the web.config file.
The tag above had been entered inside the existing <system.web> tag.
Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe it isn't reading it. Try introducing a syntax error into the
web.config file and see if the syntax error is caught.
Are you sure your ISP has your app set up as an application in IIS?

Trouble Loading Code Behind Type
I'm a new VS.NET user having the following issue.
I've created a new ASP.NET WEb Forms app and have been doing some basic
things with no real problems.
I have decided that the next thing in the development will be a secured area
of the app.
I have determined the Forms Authentication is the way I am going.
I have created a basic login form and modified the Web.config file in my
app's main virtual directory (where all of my files have hitherto resided).
I got this all working, no problem. When a page was requested, the user was
redirected to the login form as expected and when authenticated the
originally requested page was properly display.
Here is where the problem comes up. The site will be a mix of public and
"auth-required" pages. So this basically means that I do not want the
"main" virtual directory of the app secured.
Here is what I did.
First, I disabled the authentication requirement on the main virtual
directory.
Then I created a new virtual directory (under the main app's virtual
directory) and called it "Secure".
I moved the Login.aspx (my custom login form) into the Secure virutal
directory and created an additional blank page in there as well.
I put a new copy of Web.config in the Secure virtual directory and
configured it up for Forms based authentication.
Here is what I expect to happen.
When a page in the app's main virtual directory is requested it loads
for anyone (this works fine).
When a page is initially requested in the Secure virtual directory the
user should be redirected to the Login form (the redirection occurs as
expected)
Here is the problem: The Login.aspx page pops a run time error
complaining that the code behind type cannot be loaded.
Parser Error Message: Could not load type 'RPG.Login'.
The application is named "RPG"
Here is the @dotnet.itags.org.Page
<%@dotnet.itags.org. Page Language="vb" AutoEventWireup="false"
Codebehind="Login.aspx.vb" Inherits="RPG.Login"%
Note: This was not erroring out when page in question was in the app's main
virtual directory. It only occurs for pages (I have tested a "Hello World"
page in the same virtual directory with the same error.
This seems to be some sort of pathing issue, but with the .aspx file and the
.aspx.vb file in the same folder, I don't get the problem. I've tried
changing the reference in the "Inherits" attribute to things like
RPG.Secure.Login but I'm too new to the environment to understand the
Namespace.Class reference and how it is effected by the location of the
files in question.
TIADo you have a file called "RPG.dll" in the /bin folder in the web application root?
Yes. RPG/bin/RPG.dll exists.
Trouble on creating a new web project - UNC share does not exist or you do not have access

Trouble opening an existing web application
Visual Studio cannot create or open the application. The likeliest problem is that required components are not installed to the local web server. Run visual studio .NET setup and add the web development tool.
Trouble programatically getting form values on PostBack
protected System.Web.UI.WebControls.RadioButtonList rblSymbols;
protected System.Web.UI.WebControls.CheckBox chkPublish;
protected System.Web.UI.WebControls.DropDownList ddlSubject;
protected System.Web.UI.WebControls.TextBox txtEntry;
protected System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button btnSave;
The btnSave_Click(object sender, System.EventArgs e) is properly registered in the InitializeComponent() method. Inside the btnSave_Click() method, I call another function to save to the db which works fine. However, when I attempt to reference the values of those items, they are not set properly. It's as if the IPostBackDataHandler.LoadPostData() method in the Init of the page lifecycle is not being done at all. Any ideas? So far, I have had to result to the following until this is figured out:
YUCK!:
**********************
myObj.Entry = Request["txtEntry"];
Preferred:
**********************
myObj.Entry = txtEntry.Text;
Thanks in advance for any insight you might have.
--ChadIs it possible you've disabled Viewstate at some point?
Peter,
Yes, itIS possible. In fact, I have done just that on several of my controls. Is this the problem? I will try re-enabling. I have read so much on the pros and cons of keeping it turned on. Is is safe to assume that if I wish to program as described above, I need to keep viewstate enabled?
--Chad
Heh... yeah, that could be the problem :)
ViewState is the mechanism by which your controls' properties are persisted across postbacks. If you want to grab myControl.Text, for example, you must have Viewstate enabled.
On the other hand, if you don't mind grabbing values from the Request.Form collection, you can kill Viewstate with impunity.
Cheers,
Peter - thanks for clearing this up for me! Very helpful!

Boy, am I a dope! I thought datareader.read worked along the lines of record
set.EOF. I thought it was a simple boolean property that told you if any rec
ords were returned or not. But it is actually a method that returns a boolea
n. I guess you learn someth

Boy, am I a dope! I thought datareader.read worked along the lines of recordset.EOF. I thought it was a simple boolean property that told you if any records were returned or not. But it is actually a method that returns a boolean. I guess you learn something new every day. Thanks much!!

Trouble viewing ASP buttons on a web form
I am a long-time java programmer, trying to learn about ASP.NET. I am trying write a simple "Hello, Browser" web form using the Visual Studio .NET web form designer. The form consists of a web form label and 3 web form buttons. The buttons don't perform any function. However, when I build and run the program, a browser pops up, but only displays the label and not the buttons. Can anyone tell me what the problem might be? Is it a problem with the code, or maybe some settings?
Thank YouCan you post your code?
If you installed IIS after Visual Studio .NET, you have to register ASP.NET with IIS. You can do this by opening a VS.NET command prompt (i.e. Start > Programs > Visual Studio .NET > Tools > Command Prompt) and typing:
aspnet_regiis -i
That should do the trick. ;)
Super!
This forum is such an amazing resource. I would have never guessed that on my own. Stanley Tan, your solution worked.
Thank you. Thank You. Thank You.
Trouble when creating new ASP .NET Web Project in Visual Studio .NET 2003
Hi all, my name is Ivan and I'm sort of newbie in ASP .NET
I installed Visual Studio .NET 2003, and also IIS 5.1 on OS XP Professional SP2.
I created and developed some great windows applications in Studio, but when I tried to do the same while creating new ASP .NET Project and New Web Project I received an error HTTP:1.1 500 Internal Server Error
Help me out, please
Hi did u check whether your IIS is running?
also try to browse ur page from IIS MMC...
also check whether you are getting any entries in your event log when u get this error
Thanks for the reply.
1. My IIS is running, of course.
2. I named my asp web project as "NewASPProj" and it is in C:\InetPub\wwwroot directory on my system.
I tested it with opening my IE and typed URL: http://localhost
It opened two asp pages IIS start and IIShelp.
3. As for the messages in event log I'll post it on a forum in a few days
Hi Ivan,
Based on my understanding, when you wanted to create the asp.net 1.x application with Visual Studio 2003, you got the error message above. If I have misunderstood you, please feel free to let me know.
The error message "HTTP:1.1 500 Internal Server Error" indicates that your server encounter an unexpected condition which prevented it from fulfilling the request.
Please make sure that the IIS works correctly. We can execute the iisreset at the command prompt to reset the IIS's setting. Besides, we should configure your asp.net 1.x application properly on the IIS.
For more information, seehttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/822319.
I hope this helps.
Trouble with authentication in asp.net
* Created the user "testuser" on the local machine
* created the group "testgroup" on the local machine
* added testuser -> testgroup
* created an asp.net webapp in IIS and set it to windows authentication
* in explorer, I have added testgroup to read rights on the web app folder.
* Now I run the app, I enter the username and password and it let me in..
BUT when I write User.IsInRole("testgroup") I get "false"... why is that? I should get "true"...
so my problem is with the groups, everything else works fine!!!
whats the problem?
/HenrikHave you set identity impersonation to true?
Yes!! But im not sure it matters?
I have done something similar for a winforms app, but there I fetched the group info from the AD using system.directoryservices and then created genericprincipal and genericidentity... then it works to check Thread.User.IsInRole("wewwq"),,,
im not sure what to do with asp.net to get the same functionality...
/henrik
Maybe you need to disable "anonymous" in the IIS server.
It may be passing "anonymous" instead of the user id.
?
i have disabled anonymous login in the IIS, and set to windows authentication... and I get the correct username when using User.Identity.Name its the groups that dont work correct
/Henrik
Have you restarted the machine for the group changes to take effect? Or tried issuing iisreset at the command prompt?
trouble with caching or caching the trouble
here's the situation i have:
I have a default page with dynamic content, and one
button with onclick code something like this:
{
// do some processing...
Serever.Transfer("second_page.aspx");
// or Response.Redirect("second_page.aspx"); same in
// this case
}
On second page i have a new button called "return to
default page" and in his onclick eventhandler
if i say:
- Serever.Transfer("second_page.aspx"); : It return
se me to default page alright, but in the default page
initial state, not the state in which it was just before
user navigate to the second page.
- Response.Redirect("second_page.aspx"); : Same thing
like Server.Transfer(), it transfers me to the default
page initial state.
- Response.Write("<script>history.go(" +
DepthIndex ");</script>"); : It transfers me to a desired
page alright, but instantly returns where it was (on
second page). Is this wired or what?
I suspect problem is in caching, since it is not good
practice to transfer or redirect to default page and
recreate its prevous state, but i cant figure out this
asp.net caching. I have line in my default.aspx page:
<%@dotnet.itags.org. OutputCache Duration="3600" VaryByParam="none" %>
It results is that default page is unable to do any
roundtrips anymore and totaly blocked. If i say:
<%@dotnet.itags.org. OutputCache Duration="3600" VaryByParam="*" %>
It acts like there's no caching, like in firts case.
Im aware that i must save my whole page to a cache just
before i redirect to another page and then, when user
wants to go back to default page, retrive it from cache
and display it ot the user. But, how do i do that?
Cache.Insert("DefaultPage", Self);
and then later:
Self = Cache["DefaultPage"];
Or is this another of my sily ideas?
I hope someone understud what i want, and by the way,
viewstate is turned off globaly if it is relevant.
Any help would be much appreciated.

This is third option:

I dont know why, but this was recognized as actual
JScript statment inside the original post...

It doesnt matter how many steps i go back in history,
result is always the same :(
I, againg suspet that something with caching options is
just not right, but i dont know what.

Recreatin of the page is not good practice, it is much
better to save whole page (in cache?) nad retrive it
later. Anyway, it says that in msdn, but it dont show
how...
Damn, this post engine dosnt show any html elements
inside the post, sory folks..... hello ms, gotta a new
bug ?
Since you have done nothing to grab the ViewState going to the second page,
the values are cleared out for both Response.Redirect and Server.Transfer.
In the case of the JavaScript, check the condition that causes the page to
transfer. Most likely, you are sending them back to the page, but the
condition forwarding them is still true (not surprising actually, as the
value is likely stored, along with everything else, in viewstate).
Without understanding your application, I cannot comment specifics, but it
is likely you are going about this the wrong way ... from a .NET
perspective. You have options:
1. Grab the ViewState info on the second_page.aspx page and store it for
when a person hits the "go back" condition. You can then reconstitute the
form.
2. Build up forms with multiple views (using, for example, panels). As a
person steps through you show different panels. You can then save the
information for all panels as they are filled out, and go back to any step
without losing the data from other steps. This may be what you are aiming
at.
3. Go to a multi-tiered setup where individual pages make up the views. The
Microsoft UI Process Application Block can be used, if you want a true OO
solution.

ViewState will still be holding the condition that causes the original
Server.Transfer(), so JavaScript back is not a great option when you are
transfering.

To bring you little closly my app. :
default.aspx and second_page.aspx consists form datagrids
with custom paging implemented, and navigation buttons.
Viewstate is turned off glabaly for all elements (is this
good?)
Hypothethical situation. User browse on default's page
datagird and lets say go to page 5. Then he hits the
button to transfer himself on second_page.aspx. Do what
he have to to on second_page then he wants to go back on
default to continue browsing, he hits the >> back <<
button on page Response.Redirect("default.apsx") do his
job, he is back on defalt page but not any more on pga 5,
but page 1 (initial page).
How do i avoid this situation, yes i can recreate page
using session variable, but i dont want. It mus be some
better solution.
Thanks for your time, best regards

Trouble with connection string in web.config
Any help is greatly appreciated...
Bump, still stuck on this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.<configuration>
<appSettings>
<add key="ConnectionString" value="Server=localhost;database=msdb;Trusted_Connection=yes" />
</appSettings>
</configuration
Sub Page_Load(Sender as Object, E as EventArgs)
Dim strConnectionString as string = ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings("ConnectionString")
Dim strSQL As String = "SELECT * FROM log_shipping_databases"
Dim MyConnection as new Sqlconnection(strConnectionString)
Dim MyCommand as new SqlCommand(strSQL, MyConnection)MyConnection.Open()
MyDataGrid.DataSource = MyCommand.ExecuteReader()
MyDataGrid.DataBind()
MyConnection.Close()
End Sub
Have you had anything work from your web.config file?? The only thing I can think of is that your IIS application is not configured correctly. If this is the case, your .aspx pages will work, but IIS will not know where to look for your web.config file. This may not be the case at all....but it is my best guess at your problem. Check your site in IIS an make sure your application is configured correctly. And also double check to see that your web.config file is in the root of said application.
Hope that helps
-Jason
Jason,
Thanks for the reply. I went into IIS and made sure everything was ok, and as far as I can tell it seemed to be set up correctly. However, I deleted the existing virtual directory and created a brand new directory and set up the application again. It is still not working as intended though.
I also attempted to obtain other information that was contained in the web.config file and that did not work either.
Lastly, I am creating all my .aspx files in the root directory and that is where web.config resides as well.
Can you think of a particular setting I can check to verify everything is set up correctly? Thanks for the input thus far.
-Corey
Have you imported System.Configuration?
If you are going to use ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings("ConnectionString") then you need to import System.Configuration. I usually import System.Configuration.ConfigurationSettings and then just use AppSettings("ConnectionString") so there is less code to write.
Yes, I have also tried that as well. Below is the complete code for my project.
<%@. Page Language="VB" %>
Imports System.Configuration<script runat="server"
Sub Page_Load(Sender as Object, E as EventArgs)
Dim strConnectionString as string = ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings("ConnectionString")
Dim strSQL As String = "SELECT * FROM log_shipping_databases"
Dim MyConnection as new System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnection(strConnectionString)
Dim MyCommand as new System.Data.OleDb.OleDBCommand(strSQL, MyConnection)MyConnection.Open()
MyDataGrid.DataSource = MyCommand.ExecuteReader()
MyDataGrid.DataBind()
MyConnection.Close()
End Sub</script>
<html>
<head>
</head>
<body>
<form runat="server">
<asp:datagrid id="MyDataGrid" runat="server"></asp:datagrid>
</form>
</body>
</html
Delete any web.configs that are outside of your virtual apps.
This can cause problems.
So inside wwwroot there will be no web.config file, they will only be inside your applications folders.
HTH
Not that it matters in this case, but you got the syntax for importing a namespace wrong. It should have been:
<%@. Page Language="VB" %>
<%@. Import Namespace="System.Configuration" %>
It doesn't matter in this case, as it's not necessary. Your code, as shown, is sufficient to call information from web.config.
So, your problem is not in code. It is likely a setup problem. For example, the web.config file must go in the root folder of your Application. Like this:
c:\
\inetpub
\wwwroot
\MyApp
web.config
default.aspx
If you've placed it inside wwwroot, rather than the root of your own Application, this would cause your problem.
Hence, can you confirm that you've placed your web.config and your ASPX page in their own App folder, as shown? And that that app has been made a Web Application with IIS?
I think the following link could be useful.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/cpguide/html/cpconaspnetconfiguration.asp
The web.config is inheritable. This means you can have a web.config in wwwroot and in your application folder. When you call ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings("ConnectionString")
the MyApp web.config would be checked first. If that key isn't found then it would look in wwwroot. So, it is not required that you have a web.config in the app folder if you have one in wwwroot. I create a lot of applications that use a connection string so the connection string is placed in the wwwroot web.config that way it resides in one location. Then the web.config files in the app folder only hold application level settings.
Also, virtual roots or IIS applications do not affect this at all. I have tested it both ways. With or without a virtual root the web.config inheritance still works.
The last post is a good test but I don't think it's going to solve the problem. If you had a web.config in wwwroot and a connection string key in there, you wouldn't have to have a web.config in your application folder.
I actually am curious to see if the namespace correction mentioned above fixes things. SomeNewKid2, if he was using incorrect syntax on importing the namespace then I think it would matter, right? No namespace would mean no ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings exists to the application.
No, System.Configuration is a namespace that's implicitly imported with inline code. Hence, he can use ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings, without explicitly importing its namespace.
The way he had it meant it was simply considered literal text. No harm done, and it wouldn't have solved his problem even if his syntax was correct.
(I have used his own code to access a web.config. Works fine. The problem is not in his code.)
Below is where my web.config and default.aspx files reside:
c:\inetpub\wwwroot\training\web.config
c:\inetpub\wwwroot\training\default.aspx
Also, I have checked IIS to verify that it is set up as an application. I also deleted the virtual directory and setup it up as an application from scratch in IIS. I may very well be excluding a minor detail somewhere, but I can't seem to indetify it.
Thanks for all the help,
Corey
Back up your current default.aspx and web.config files. (Or just rename them temporarily.)
Try replacing your web.config with this very simple one:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
<configuration
<appSettings>
<add key="ConnectionString" value="Server=localhost;database=msdb;Trusted_Connection=yes" />
</appSettings
<system.web>
</system.web
</configuration>
Now, replace your default.aspx with this modified version:
<%@. Page Language="VB" Debug="true" %
<script runat="server"
Sub Page_Load(Sender as Object, E as EventArgs)
Dim strConnectionString as string = ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings("ConnectionString")
Dim strSQL As String = "SELECT * FROM log_shipping_databases"
'Dim MyConnection as new System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnection(strConnectionString)
'Dim MyCommand as new System.Data.OleDb.OleDBCommand(strSQL, MyConnection)'MyConnection.Open()
'MyDataGrid.DataSource = MyCommand.ExecuteReader()
'MyDataGrid.DataBind()
'MyConnection.Close()
Message.Text = strConnectionString
End Sub</script>
<html>
<head>
</head>
<body>
<form runat="server">
<asp:datagrid id="MyDataGrid" runat="server"></asp:datagrid>
<asp:Label id="Message" runat="server" />
</form>
</body>
</html>
This code works fine on my machine. Let me know if it works okay on yours. (It should simply show the ConnectionString value that it retrieved from web.config.)
It prints the connection string to the browser:
Server=localhost;database=msdb;Trusted_Connection=yes
Which means it worked.
Well, the .aspx file is just a simplified version of your own. Which suggests that there is merely an error in your web.config file.
Since the web.config file is an XML file, it is very sensitive to syntax and proper nesting of statements.
You probably just have a statement in the wrong place.
Do you want to post the code for your web.config file?

1GB of free RAM.
Thank you a lot in advance!
DanielHi Daniel,
Welcome to ASPNET newsgroup.
From your description, you're currently suffering a out-of-memory excpetion
on your webserver that host the ASP.NET application. Also from the perfmon
log, you found that there're huge numbers of StateServer Session time out
entries.
Well, for the
\\FFDS24\ASP.NET v1.1.4322\State Server Sessions Timed Out: 2999
\\FFDS24\ASP.NET v1.1.4322\State Server Sessions Total: 3008
entries they're only meaningful to server which is configured to running
asp.net state service , providing session state server for other remote
machines(also local). So is your problem server confgured as state server?
Also, how many asp.net apps are there running on your problem server and
can you try isolate the problem to only a particular web app among them?
If we can isolate the problem to a certain web app , it'll be much helpful
for us to look into it futher.
Thanks,
Steven Cheng

Hello Steven,
thank you for your reply! As I missed to mention and you most probably
already guessed the application having the problem is configured using a
state server running on exactly the same machine as the application is
running on. This server also hosts another couple of (tiny) applications
which all are configured to manage their session state inProc. Therefore the
problem I am facing is only specific to this certain application.
What information do you need to track down the problem?
Would you happen to have a documentation of the entries of the Performance
monitor? The explanations which come with performance monitor are not exactl
y
ausführlich. I still don’t know for example what Errors During Execution
are
and when the application would be compiled. Where would I get details about
this performance counters?
Thank you Steven! Your help is greatly appreciated!

Hi Daniel,
Thanks for your followup.
Based on my experience, inspite of some code related problems such as
memory leak , we can first try checking some common things which may cause
the problem. One most common issue is that when we deploy our release
version app the the server, we haven't changed the "compilation" element's
"debug" attrribute to false. Like:
<compilation debug="false"/>
So is the certain asp.net webapp's web.config debug mode turned off? If
not, since the ASP.NET runtime won't use batch compilation for the pages or
other dynamnic compiled resources, it'll make those compiled pages or
components in separate assemblies and make the memory divdided into
individual sections. Thus, it's possible to cause memory fragment that'll
cause allocate large block of memory failed.
In addition, since the ASP.NET has workprocess recycle setting on memory
limitation, that means the runtime will recycle the worker process when its
used memory size has exceed a certain configured value. Is your server 2k
server or 2003 server and how much is the total physical memory on the
server? For 2k server, the setting is in the <processModel> element in
machine.config, For 2003 server(iis6), we can configure it in the IIS's
application pool setting. So you can check whether you've set it memory
limit to a very high value so that the process won't recycle before the
used memory exceed that value.

Steven Cheng

Steven,
thank you for your answer. In fact, to my horror, I had to realize that
<compilation debug/> was set to true which I now changed to false.
As for your question regarding the server the application is hosted of a 2
processor xeon with 2 GB RAM and Windows 2003 Server. I checked IIS
Application Pool Settings and the only thing which is configured is “Recyc
le
worker process (in minutes)”. There are no settings configured for “Memo
ry
recycling”. As I already mentioned there is almost always 1GB RAM availabl
e,
only for a couple of times when only 800MB were available. Recycling of the
process due to lack of memory should definitely not be a problem, at least
this is what I would have expected…
Greetings
Daniel

Hi Daniel,
Thanks for the followup. If the compiliation/@.debug has already been turned
off and still encountering out-of-memory exceptions , the problem maybe
somewhat hard to troubleshoot form the surface. And currently I'm thinking
the problem maybe something related to the STATEserver session. Something I
wanted to point out is that storing data in the ASP.NET Session in the
State Service or SQL Server can be memory intensive depending on the types
of data being stored. The w3wp.exe process has to serialize the data
before saving it into session. This can result in 2 - 3 objects being
created for the serialization process to occur. If this occurs for a
dataset that is 100 MB in size, it could
potentially create 200-300 MB of objects to store it in session before the
request is complete. The following link has some information from one of
our developers outlining the differences in session and recommendations:
Understanding session state modes + FAQ
http://www.asp.net/Forums/ShowPost...x=1&PostID=7504
So is there any particular large objects or non-seriazable objects which
your application frequently trying to store into out of process session?
BTW, looking at the nature of this issue, it would require intensive
troubleshooting(memory dump and analysis) which would be done quickly and
effectively with direct assistance from a Microsoft Support Professional
through Microsoft Product Support Services. So I also recommend you
consider opening a regular case for this issue if you feel it urgent and
critical.
Thanks,

| Steven,
|
| thank you for your answer. In fact, to my horror, I had to realize that
| <compilation debug/> was set to true which I now changed to false.
| As for your question regarding the server the application is hosted of a
2
| processor xeon with 2 GB RAM and Windows 2003 Server. I checked IIS
| Application Pool Settings and the only thing which is configured is
“Recycle

Steven,
In regards to your post on 7/24 below. I think I'm having a problem related
to this. I have app running on a windows 2003 web farm and after a couple
hours I get the error below . Even though this app runs OK on my dev machin
e
and during testing, half way through the day, one of the production servers
eventually seems to raise this. I am storing datasets in sessions but I don'
t
know how I can determine if this is the problem. If datasets can be a
problem, I'm not sure what I can do as a workaround...
My error...
